Saint Mary's Angels - Sweat For a Cause

The Gouldsmith Family

In January of 2022, we came together and sweat for a cause in support of the Gouldsmiths: Buddy, Heather, Garrett, Gunner, and Gabby. A family in our community who has endured the unimaginable.

When she was just 7 years old, the Gouldsmith’s youngest, Gabby, was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia. An extremely rare condition that keeps the body from producing new blood cells as a result of damaged bone marrow. In an effort to save Gabby’s life, the family made a choice to pack up and move from their home in Reno to Oakland Children’s Hospital in California where Gabby and her mother, Heather, lived for four months. Gabby was out of school for 2 years, taking 30 pills a day, and needed a fix for her diagnosis. A bone marrow transplant would be that fix and her oldest brother, Garrett, would be the one to give it to her. At just 12 years old, Garrett made the choice to donate his bone barrow to his little sister which drastically improved her condition.

In June of 2021, the Gouldsmiths were faced with yet another challenge. After a routine visit with her doctor, Heather was diagnosed with triple-positive breast cancer. In the midst of battling another diagnosis in the family, the Gouldsmiths were faced with their toughest challenge yet.

In August of 2021, Heather and Buddy were celebrating their wedding anniversary with friends and family at Donnor Lake when their lives changed forever. Garrett and his brother, Gunner, had gone boating with friends while Heather and Buddy headed home from the lake. Shortly after returning home, Buddy received a hysterical call from his son, Gunner. Heather and Buddy rushed to the lake where they found the Truckee Police Department on the scene. Gunner had pulled his brother out of the lake and began CPR but it was too late. 22-year-old Garrett passed away that day at Donnor Lake and the Gouldsmiths lost a light in their family.

A beautiful service with hundreds of loved ones was held for Garrett at Montreux Golf and Country Club where he worked. The Gouldsmiths continue to remember their son and his bright light while Heather continues her fight against breast cancer.

With the help of our community, Saint Mary’s Angels raised over $14,000 for the Gouldsmiths to assist with medical bills and any other costs they have encountered as a result of their misfortune.

Through trying times, we have proved that together, we are Stronger At Saints!
