June 28 - Practice Gratitude:

The definition of gratitude is: the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness. From the previous posts, it is already clear that a little bit of positivity goes a very long way. Its time to change the way we think from “what we do not have” or “I wish I had,” to being thankful for “what we do have.”

Practicing gratitude can be tough, especially when things in life are perhaps not going your way. Focusing on the positive parts of your life that you DO have will actually help to cope with the more difficult situations. In addition, being appreciative for the people and opportunities in your life is one big step toward having a happy, healthy outlook on life. This will not only impact your happiness, but everyone around you as well.

Just like any habit, practice makes perfect (or better). Do not assume this will come easy, but trust that the effort to practice gratitude will brighten your life. Here are some ways you can begin to practice, and incorporate, thankfulness into your daily routine:

  • Write down at least one thing each day that you are grateful for.
  • Pay attention to all the greatness in the world that we take for granted every day.
  • Give at least one compliment per day. You will make someone’s day.
  • Try to learn from every life experience; even the tough ones.
  • Be genuine, especially to those who are important to you.
  • Become involved in a cause that is important to you.

Your challenge is to do your best to not complain, criticize, or gossip for an entire day. You will be amazed at how lighthearted and grateful you will feel.

My name is Janelle Dorangricchia, and I am the Fitness and Personal Training Supervisor at Saint Mary’s Fitness Center. I hold a bachelors degree in Health Ecology, and I am in the process of obtaining my MBA through UNR. My fiancé and I share the love for fitness and health, and we inspire each other to continuously grow. I am also a mother to Bella who is 16 months old and the light in my life!
